USA rhythmic gymnastics don't qualify for finals.
U.S. athletes competing in the 2007 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Patras, Greece, failed to qualify for the final in the all-around competition, placing the U.S. presence in the sport at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in jeopardy. The trio of young U.S. performers made progress compared to results at the 2005 world championships.
But improvement:
The United States improved by 20 spots its top place from the 2005 world championships, when the top U.S. finisher in all-around qualifying finished 48th. Further, Wang improved by 30 places her final qualifying position at the 2005 worlds, where she finished 58th. "Our rhythmic team has worked hard to prepare for this year's world championships," Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics, said today in a statement "To move up so far in two years is a significant accomplishment, and we are proud of the commitment and effort they have made. This progress will serve as motivation for the future development of the rhythmic program." The United States has entered a team in the group competition, which begins Saturday. The 10 top countries plus two wild-card teams qualify to send teams to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Pictures and videos on wcsn, but you have to register. Here's the article for the quotes: "U.S. shows improvement, but not enough", http://web.wcsn.com/article/news.jsp?ymd=20070919&content_id=42864&vkey=gymnastics_news&id=34012&dpre= Rhythmic gymnastics isn't so big in the USA - you can tell by the lack of media on it on tv and the newspapers! Probably much much bigger in Russia, where the top rhythmic gymnast champions are from!
