You probably could tell from the title who it is - the most-decorated American gymnast - as that is how she is introduced a lot - Shannon Miller's getting married this Saturday! Her fiance jumping through hoops:
John Falconetti credits his relationship with Shannon Miller to golf, former pro baseball player Rick Wilkins, persistence and "lots of surprise flowers and chocolates." Falconetti, 39, said he first saw Miller, 30, when she was one of the celebrities playing in the Rick Wilkins Foundation Celebrity Golf Tournament for Charity two years ago. "I asked Rick's father, Ray, who she was and immediately upgraded my sponsorship so she had to sit next to me for the whole weekend," said Falconetti, president of Drummond Press. Miller attends many such events each year and never gives out any personal information. "He tracked my e-mail down through a publicist," she said. Then it was a matter of Falconetti finding excuses to go to New York and Boston, where Miller was in law school at Boston College. Finally, he came up with an inspiration: spearhead the effort to bring Olympic gymnastics back to Jacksonville and name Miller the city's athletic representative. Former City Council President Kevin Hyde was one of the leaders Falconetti approached with the idea. "If it will help you get married, buddy, we'll do it," Hyde said he responded. More time together ensued and while the city didn't win next year's qualifier, it did get the American Cup competition in March. "I was starting to get clued in by then," Miller said, "but our gymnastics federation was delighted to come here." Miller had transferred to the University of Florida as a visiting student for her last year of law school. Falconetti popped the question in January.
Talk about effort! It's his first marriage. Their honeymoon will be in Italy's Tuscan countryside and Lake Como. When they come back they're going to sell his condo and get a house so they can have a dog. Miller's schedule:
Miller, who was an analyst for MSNBC during the 2000 Sydney Olympics, has the games in Beijing to plan for, in addition to the series of balance beam clinics she conducts around the country, her motivational speaking schedule, the weekly Gymnastics USA with Shannon Miller TV show on CN8, the Comcast Network in New York, and the recently established Shannon Miller Foundation's efforts to fight childhood obesity. Also, the golf tournament that brought them together; it's scheduled for Nov. 9-11. "It's on my calendar," Miller said. "If I can be in town, I'll be there."
