Event finals
Quote:
The host country Brazil and the U.S. both win 4 golds each on event finals. For women's gymnastics, Brazil's Jade Barbosa won vault, and the U.S. women finished 1-2 on the other 3 events. Highlights: Shawn Johnson wins over Nastia Luikin - they finish 1-2 on bars and beam. Nastia was the top qualifier on bars, but she fell on her new invert to double front dismount. Rebecca Bross, from WOGA like Nastia, won over Shawn on floor with a 0.25 margin. Worlds will be really fun! Men's: Brazil men did better - Diego Hypolito won gold on floor and vault, and his teammate Mosiah Rodrigues won high bar. Venezuela's Regulo Carmona won rings even though he fell on his full-twisting double layout dismount - the new code working?! Justin Spring (U.S.) won p-bars, Luis Vargas (Puerto Rico) won pommel horse. Here are the results: 2007 Pan American Games July 17, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Women's Vault 1. Jade Barbosa BRA 14.912 2. Daiane dos Santos was one of the top event finals qualifier for floor but she's not listed - probably she withdrew to not re-injure her right ankle -she got a level-one torsion on her right ankle on July 6: http://www.gymchat.com/messageboards/viewtopic.php?t=994

Good guess - Daiane dos Santos did withdraw because of injury, but because she twisted some ligaments in her left ankle. It's in an article listed in the Gymnastics Blogs / RSS News Feeds section: Champion gymnast Dos Santos leaves Pan Am Games due to injury (People's Daily): http://www.gymchat.com/messageboards/viewtopic.php?t=1019
According to the national gymnastics teams' supervisor Eliane Martins, Dos Santos is not in condition to compete, as tests showed that she twisted the ligaments of her left ankle. The team's physician explained that the injury is not severe, but she will not be able to be completely recovered up to Tuesday, when she would take part in the individual finals. The gymnast has been suffering with pain since a week before the beginning of the Games, when she got injured during practice and her participation in the competition became uncertain. She soon recovered, just in time to help the Brazilian women's team win the silver medal on Saturday, when she presented herself on the floor.
A lot of twisting moves in her routines. Other articles on the Pan Am Games gymnastics: Another big day for gymnast Johnson, Americans (The Des Moines Register): http://www.gymchat.com/messageboards/viewtopic.php?t=1021
"I feel so proud of every thing and that the hard work has really paid off," said Johnson. "My coaches, parents and teammates have helped me get through the good times and the hard times. It is pretty amazing."
There's a picture of Shawn and her teammates with her gold medal there (USA sweep)
"These few days have provided a terrific opportunity for our athletes to represent their country and sharpen their competitive skills. We are all proud of them," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics.

"In Santo Domingo (in 2003), I got the bronze," said Liukin, of Parker, Texas. "This year, I could've gone further, but I just underwent surgery on my right ankle, which jeopardized my performance a little. Considering, I think silver is a good result."
Ya, she could've gone for the All-Around. Jeering crowd throws off Canadian gymnast (Toronto Star): http://www.gymchat.com/messageboards/viewtopic.php?t=1017 during event finals:
The fans jeered Lee when she began her routine, and then cheered when she tumbled off the beam. She completely unravelled from that point on, falling twice more before her routine came to a merciful end. "I've never ever experienced this as a gymnast, and I find it a lot like a hockey game," Lee said afterwards.
Wow, that is not good sportsmanship. They should have just cheered who they wanted, not boo other people.
Lee, touted as the best young gymnast Canada's produced in years, managed to bounce back to finish fourth in the floor. But it wasn't until after her coach Carol-Angela Orchard gave her the option of pulling out. "I'm feeling a little badly that I didn't prepare her for it, but I was a bit shocked by it also," said Orchard. "We were certainly wrapped up in it in Day 1 when she was the only athlete out there that they fell in love with, so I think we were taken a little bit off-guard." The difference Tuesday was that the Brazilians were also competing. Daniele Hypolito of Brazil won the bronze on beam, while teammate Jade Barbosa was fourth. "Today, it was a passionate crowd and they want their home team to win, and we totally understand that," said Orchard. "We just weren't quite ready for the reaction. "It was a heck of a comeback (in the floor). It's to her credit that she could pull that off actually. It's pretty shocking for her to fall three times on beam, and it would have been really easy to fall apart at that moment."

"I feel I have learned something," she said. "I have to block out everything around me and just do it for myself."
Yup! Coaches always say that!

Mexico's women's gymnastics team loses its team bronze medal and it goes to Canada:
PASO (Pan American Sports Organisation) executive committee voted unanimously to disqualify Mexico and upgrade Canada from fourth to the bronze medal position. During the team competition on Saturday a technical delegate noticed that a Mexican gymnast was accredited as an official ("As" accreditation), not as an athlete ("Ao" accreditation) and reported it to PASO. After an investigation, the PASO executive committee made the decision to disqualify the Mexican team for a breach of rules.
I guess it wasn't just a paper work issue.
