I'm Coming Back Baby!
I'm 67 y/o. I started running in my 30's and completed 9 full marathons and used to run 3-4,000 miles annually in Michigan. I moved to FL 12+ years ago and was running up a moderate grade hill and suddenly it felt like someone shot me in the knee! I limped home and did the normal I.C.E. first aid. I went to 3 different Docs in my area and got 3 different diagnoses but no cures or treatment other that heat & stretching. Bottom line is that I gave up running (my drug of choice) because it hurt too much. I started going to the gym 4-6 days a week and have done that for several years. The running bug has always been with me, so I'd warm up on the treadmill for 1/2 mile before my workout. Over the last 6 months I decided to try something different, and I've started doing leg exercises centered on my knee. I am keeping the weights relatively light, but I'm hoping that strengthening the knee area might help. I decided to give running a shot again last week and I ran 4 times for between 1.5/2.0 miles each time. Yeah, I know it's weak but it's a start. I ran 2 miles Sunday and 2 more today AND MY KNEE DOESN'T HURT! I am so geeked right now that I can run a little bit without pain!
I guess the point of this post is to not totally give up. My mental state is elevated because I see running in my future. Will I run a Marathon in the future? I'm not planning on it, but I can run again!
