It does look like it's Varli Liukin and Nastia Liukin there - he does a similar kind of spot technique here in her warm-up bars routine for her geinger: [youtube]nnzE6zahFnM[/youtube] via gymnasticscoaching: Nastia on bars in training If you go through the gymnastics coaching jobs, a lot of times they actually say something like 'must have good spotting skill', 'know how to spot', etc., so it's probably pretty much accepted now that having coaches who know how to spot is an advantage in learning gymnastics, for safety, doing skills technically right, progression, etc. At West Valley Gymnastics too now, for example.
