The United States' men's water polo team, coached by California mentor Kirk Everist, finished sixth at the World University Games Sunday, July 12 in Belgrade, Serbia with a hard-fought 9-8 loss to Hungary in the fifth-place match. The American squad - which included former Cal standouts John Mann, Trent Calder and Zac Monsees; plus current Golden Bears Mike Sample and Zach White - ended the tournament 3-3-1. Cal sophomore Luka Saponjic was a member of the Serbia squad that defeated Greece, 9-4, for the Bronze medal, playing 18 minutes of the third-place match. Saponjic concluded the tournament with four goals in six matches.
