Cal Men's Water Polo Defeats Navy, 8-5, in NCAA First Round Action
Led by three goals apiece from seniors Michael Sharf and Jeff Tyrrell, the No. 2-ranked California men's water polo team (27-4) has earned the right to defend its 2006 national title with an 8-5 victory over Navy (29-6) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Avery Aquatics Center on the Stanford campus. With the win, the Golden Bears will now play No. 1-ranked USC (19-2) at 2 p.m. Sunday for the 2007 NCAA crown. Cal defeated the Trojans, 7-6, on Tyrrell's last second shot in last year's championship match. USC had defeated Loyola Marymount, 8-4, in Saturday's other first round contest.
