The U.S. relay posted an American-record time of 7:42.56 to finish behind China's gold-medal and world-record time of 7:42.08. In her lead-off leg, Vollmer tied the 200-free personal record of 1:55.29 that she set on July 28 and gave her team a slight lead over the Chinese.
