''Torrential rainfall across Manchester throughout the evening led to flooding in the areas around the ground, which forced the decision on safety and security grounds,'' City said in a statement. There had been heavy rain, thunder and lightning in the hours leading up to the Group C game at Etihad Stadium, and UEFA officials and match officials inspected the sodden playing surface about an hour before the game.
