The 23-year-old O'Neill severely twisted his left ankle and damaged ligaments in a Monday training session. He was kept off the foot Tuesday, while it was iced and treated to therapy. Wednesday, he had a modified workout without hard landings.
Thursday, Canadian head coach Edouard Iarov of Cantley, Que., watched O'Neill practice gamely and approved him for the qualifier.
"Brandon struggled but he did well enough and showed his brave character today. We couldn't take him off the team," Iarov said in a statement from the team.
O'Neill worked on all four apparatus he was slated to compete on --- vault, parallel bars, high bar and floor
