Shayla Worley going for making the team this weekend at selection camp in Texas, at Karolyi's ranch. The other spots - 2 are confirmed - Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin, after the Nationals which they finished 1 and 2 - and probably also Alicia Sacramone, Chellsie Memmel, and Samantha Peszek.
The Orlando Metro gymnast heads off to selection camp in Texas today, hoping to do enough to secure a spot on the Olympic team. The six-member gymnastics team will be announced Sunday, along with three alternates. "I feel like I'm ready for this," Worley said. "I've trained my whole life and these past few weeks of training have gone really well. I'm ready to go." The selection camp is the final stage of a three-part process in which gymnasts had to prove their readiness for the Olympics. Unfortunately for Worley, she has been at a slight disadvantage because of a nagging back injury. She missed the U.S. championships in early June, then was limited to three events at the Olympic trials a few weeks ago. Worley says her back is fine and has been able to practice all her routines since returning from the trials. The camp is her chance to show she is completely healthy and deserving of being on the Olympic team. Though women's national team coordinator Martha Karolyi has the performances of the past month to judge, she also will take into account prior experience on the international level.
The other competition:
Worley competed on the U.S. team that won gold at the world championships last year, so that could be to her benefit. But it is going to be extremely difficult to make the team. Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin already are on the squad because they finished in the top two at the trials. Ten other women will compete at the camp for the final four spots. But after strong performances at the trials from Chellsie Memmel, Alicia Sacramone and Samantha Peszek, only one spot on the team that competes in China next month might be up for grabs. Worley believes Karolyi already has an idea of who will be selected. "Hopefully I'm on that team," Worley said.
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/orl-worley1608jul16,0,553005.story?track=rss Lots of people think that both Martha and Bela Karolyi have an idea - they have been watching them workout, practice routines, and also their competition routines a lot. 3 scores count on each event for the team competition. The uSA team will be based on who can fill up the gaps after Shawn's and Nastia's best events, and Alicia Sac's vault - probably the 6th person needs to fill the bars and vault gaps.
