Australian gymnastics update:
Joura, Rizzo win gymnastics medals in US
AAP - March 31, 2008, 6:00 pm
Australian gymnast Daria Joura has tuned up for the Olympics in style with a bronze medal in the all-around event at the Pacific Rim Championships.
It has been a successful North American trip for Joura, who took out the Friendship Classic in Pennsylvania two weeks ago.
Male colleague Philippe Rizzo again demonstrated why he will be an unlucky onlooker at the Games with a victory in the high bar.
Rizzo missed last year's world championships following Achilles tendon surgery and missed out on the chance to compete at the Olympics when the Australian men's team didn't qualify for the Games.
The Australia's women's team finished fourth.
Joura's teammate Lauren Mitchell finished fourth on uneven bars and Victorian Ashleigh Brennan was seventh on both beam and floor.
In the men's team event Australia was sixth.
The next assignment for Australia's artistic gymnasts is the Australian Championships, the first event in the women's Olympic team selection trials, to be held at Melbourne's Vodafone Arena from May 21-25.
Too bad Philippe Rizzo can't appeal to compete at the 2008 Beijing Olympics because he was injured at the 2007 Worlds to compete/quailfy, like gymnasts can for their country's team.
