Women's Sports Beat: Gymnast flips her direction (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) From the time she was a little girl growing up in Germantown, all Justine Weyer wanted was to be a Division I college gymnast. Rather than compete on her high school's team, she went the AAU route, competing for LaFleur's Gymnastics A... Publish Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2008 06:00:01 GMT Read more...

Not all about the scholarship. Who wants mean coaches?!
"I pretty much did it for the (scholarship)," Weyer said. "Getting a scholarship for competing in gymnastics was something I always wanted. "I liked it till I got there, then I didn't like it anymore. Let's put it this way . . . my coaches weren't very nice. "It turned out to be the year from hell." As bad as it was for her at Illinois-Chicago, Weyer couldn't easily give up the scholarship. As much as her heart was telling her to transfer, her pocketbook was telling her to stick it out and she was telling her coaches into the spring of 2007 that she would return to Chicago. But in the meantime, Weyer was also talking to coaches at UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater to see what their programs had to offer. Although neither of those Division III schools could offer her a scholarship, Weyer decided that she needed to transfer. Obviously, that didn't sit well with the coaches at Illinois-Chicago. When Weyer asked to be released from her scholarship in late spring, the Flames coaches refused. "They told me I had verbally committed to return there for this year, so they wouldn't release me," Weyer said. "They told me I either had to come back or appeal it. "I had a hearing to appeal my case, but they still wouldn't release me because they didn't think my reasons were justified." But since a scholarship release isn't required by the NCAA to transfer to a Division III program, Weyer chose to go in that direction. She chose UW-Whitewater and couldn't be happier with her decision. "I went online and did a lot of research about the Whitewater and Oshkosh programs and decided on Whitewater," Weyer said. "I talked to Jen (Whitewater coach Jennifer White) a lot and she is very nice and Whitewater has an up-and-coming program." The marriage of convenience has worked out well for all involved. Weyer is leading the Warhawks, who are ranked No. 2 in Division III, to a banner season and has already set Whitewater records in all-around (38.375) and vaulting (9.7). "My one goal when I got here was to break the all-around record and now I've done that," Weyer said. "Now my goal is to get our team to nationals. I think we really deserve it." The Division III regionals are scheduled for March 8, in St. Paul, Minn., and the top three teams from there advance to the national meet, March 28 and 29 at Cortland, N.Y.
http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=720851
