The story of tango in New York
Argentine tango is a dance form that started in Argentina and Uruguay, the area of Rio de la Plata. This tango is a social dance that can be performed at balls and salons. This dance style depends a lot on the improvised dance steps that are the main reason for this dance not having any basic steps. Music is a necessary component of this dance form. Argentine tango reached New York during the mid-1985s through a Broadway show “Tango Argentino”. While the show was running, the dance performers provided lessons to learners who were fascinated by the graceful moves and grooves. A dance center was provided by Paul Pellicoro, where the artists could easily organize for classes. Learners where not just commoners but some famous people like Robert Duvall also enrolled for these lessons. For advance classes, Robert Duvall went to Nestor Ray whom he watched performing in “Tango Mio”, which was a documentary movie. Another show called Forever Tango came to United States in 1990. It initially started playing in San Francisco and later on went to Broadway, New York. It went on to make history in Broadway as the longest running show. Within Argentine tango, there are several dance styles like Tango canyengue, tango orillero, show tango, Salon tango, tango Nuevo and Estilo milonguero. Argentine Tango NYC offers learners with several courses and lessons in the best dance studios and academies. Courses are taught according to the levels of learning in dance schools. There are four levels – beginners, advanced beginners, intermediate and professional. Newcomers are enrolled into the first stage of learning as they require grooming right from the start. The advance classes need dance experience for one year and above.
