Utah wins over UCLA
Hosted at Utah. Utah: 196.325 UCLA: 195.975
The fifth-ranked UCLA gymnastics team improved by nearly two points from its season opener, setting 17 season-highs and hitting 24 of 24 routines without a fall to score 195.975 at second-ranked Utah on Friday evening. The score wasn't enough to record the victory, however, as Utah earned a 196.325 to win the meet in front of 11,418 fans. Kristina Baskett:
With other top schools failing to aggressively recruit Baskett, it wasn't too hard for the Utes to convince her to sign. What they got was a national champion, and, just maybe, the makings of a consistently great gymnast. Baskett opened her sophomore season with a 39.6 to win the all-around Friday in Utah's win over UCLA. Her scores, all 9.9s, are a model of the consistency she found late in 2006 and what she hopes to carry through this year.

Inconsistent as a club gymnast, Baskett thrived last season in the college atmosphere as she embraced the team concept and relaxed. College gymnastics brings the pressure of competing for a team, but Baskett preferred it to the often stuffy feeling of club competition. "Those meets were boring, you don't see 11,000 people at a club meet because they're so long, they just weren't fun," she said.
