US Worlds Team Announced
www.intlgymnast.com/news.html#usa The U.S. women announced their 2006 world team for the upcoming world championships in Denmark, but national champion Nastia Liukin will be limited because of an ankle injury. Liukin suffered a sprained ankle on Sunday and is currently scheduled to do uneven bars only. Liukin will be joined by Jana Bieger, Jacquelyn Johnson, Natasha Kelley, Chellsie Memmel, Ashley Priess and Alicia Sacramone. The American women won the gold and silver medals in four of the five events at the 2005 World Championships in Melbourne. Memmel and Liukin placed first and second in the all-around, Liukin topped Memmel on uneven bars and balance beam, and Sacramone and Liukin placed first and second on floor exercise. The American women won their first world team title at the 2003 Worlds in Anaheim. The team won the silver medal behind Romania at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Nastia will probably do all 4 events though, or maybe just not vault, if it's really just a sprained ankle. If it's not too serious of a sprain, a sprained ankle could heal within a week (if she doesn't try to test it too early and too hard). You can tell she's hoping and planning on doing more than uneven bars: Nastia says: "I was a little disappointed, but I'm still here on the team and I'm really excited to contribute," Liukin said. "The competition is still a whole 10 days away, and every day it's been getting better, so we'll see how it goes."

Could depend on what 'grade number' the sprain is: from http://orthopedics.about.com/cs/sprainsstrains/a/anklesprain.htm Grade I Ankle Sprain: Grade I ankle sprains cause stretching of the ligament. The symptoms tend to be limited to pain and swelling. Most patients can walk without crutches, but may not be able to jog or jump. Grade II Ankle Sprain: A grade II ankle sprain is more severe partial tearing of the ligament. There is usually more significant swelling and bruising caused by bleeding under the skin. Patients usually have pain with walking, but can take a few steps. Grade III Ankle Sprain: Grade III ankle sprains are complete tears of the ligaments. The ankle is usually quite painful, and walking can be difficult. Patients may complain of instability, or a giving-way sensation in the ankle joint.
