The USA women's gymnastics team wore some bling bling on their leotards - according to NBC the little jewels are put on one by one manually with tweezers - and won top bling bling - gold on the artistic gymnastics team final. The first gymnastics team gold for USA since the "magnificent 7" in the 1996 Olympics, though they came into the last 2 Olympics as World Champions.
This USA team, dubbed the "fab 5" put up some good routines - most notably: McKayla Maroney’s vault - wow! All of the US women did the roundoff entry, back handspring onto the vault table, and 2.5 twisting somersaults (Amanar) - start value is 6.5 - 0.7 above the vault of most other competing gymnasts. Gabby Gibson high flying bars routine - she's nicknamed flying squirrel because of it.
USA got a 1.7 lead after the first rotation, vault. Russia made it up on uneven bars with Viktoria Komova and Aliya Mustafina, and the US had 0.4 lead.
Mustafina had a lot of check balances and wobbles on beam. Komova had a short landing on her beam dismount, taking huge steps to the side, off the mat. Mustafina had an excellent floor routine. But her teammate, Anastasia Grishina didn't get a good connection takeoff in the middle of one of her tumbling passes. World champion Ksenia Afanaseva landed her dimsount on her knees.
