The 2010 World Championships event finals in Rotterdam, Netherlands, begin with the men's floor on Saturday. No more shoulder taping for Japan's Kohei Uchimura as there is no more torque and torture for his shoulder like on the still rings. Uchimura adds a silver medal with a score of 15.533 to his all-around gold and team silver at this meet. Gold-winning performance from Greece's Eleftherios Kosmidis, 15.700 with a difficulty level of 6.6 - ranked 0.1 harder than Uchimura's floor exercise. Great Britain is making a good comeback onto the international scene, great for the 2012 London Olympics, with the bronze medal for Daniel Purvis (and later with Beth Tweddle's win on bars!). Lots of Kurt Thomas saltos for the tumbling pass endings - no deduction then for a misstep on the landing. Very close scoring between the top 3 here. Great Britain is now paying salaries to their athletes, more time for training. Britain's Daniel Keatings suffered a torn acl, and will be ready for the next big competition. First up on vault finals was USA's Alicia Sacramone - she won her first ever gold medal with a 15.2. Lots of power and height. Great form. Her vaulting looks fast in slow motion too. During the medals ceremony she and her coach Mihai Brestyan were both tearing up. What a comeback A-Sac has made from the Beijing Olympics, after 2 1/2 years off. No more 'nay-sayers' for her. Russia's Aliya Mustafina had some form breaks in her vaults, and her second vault was supposed to be in a layout position, but was piked. Mustafina won silver, scoring 15.066 with a 0.1 deduction and the judges not giving her the layout. Her coach Alexander Alexandrov actually filed a protest, discussing with Nellie Kim (head of technical committe) and then President of the FIG Bruno Grandi, but did not win. Brazil's Jade Barbosa won the bronze, coming back from a 2009 injury. The pommel horse finals was an awesome competition, hit after hit by each athlete, from 8 different countries. But no athlete from China or Japan. Like Sacramone, Hungary's Krisztian Berki was up first and played the waiting game with his score of 15.833 winning the gold - and similar to Sacramone on vault, Berki has multiple world medals on pommel horse, but still hadn't clinched the gold until this Worlds meet. Great Britain's Louis Smith won the silver and Austria's Prashanth Sellathurai the bronze - he works the pommels in turbo style - really, really fast. Total opposite of the men's pommel horse event finals was the women's uneven bars. The door opens up for USA's Rebecca Bross to medal with the fall from the bars by the reighing Olympic Champion on the event China's He Kexin. Kexin catches her first release combination great, but falls on her second release sequence. Her coach standing net to her on the high bar, but no catch from him. And then her teammate, Huang Qiushuang falls on her back from the low bar, her right hand slipping on the bar as she was going to go for her kip. 25 year-old Beth Tweddle (Great Britain) had a great high-flying routine, with a mixed grip grab in one of her releases/combination sequence. Stick on the landing. USA's Bridget Sloan sticks her double layout. Aliya Mustafina had 2 steps on her dismount, but her handstands were good. Germany's Elisabeth Seitz fell on her def release move and then again on her second release move, yurchenko. As Elfi Shleggel and John Roethlisburger points out, good thing her coach is standing right next to her on the high bar...to watch her fall. A hard slam down on the mat for her. Much better spotting/catching from Valeri Luikin with Nastia on her fall from geinger on bars, and Kristen Maloyney's coach Carter catching her at the 1997 US Nationals Prelms fall from bars on geinger too (from Parkette's gym). Romania's Ana Porgras has a .2 higher start value than Sloan, but finishes 0.066 below her, in 5th place. And the last event of event finals, the muscle event men's still rings. Finishing 1-2 were Chinese teammates Chen Yibing and Yan Mingyong. Both had routines with a difficult score of 6.8 - it came down to the execution score, 9.1 vs. 8.9.
