Japan's Kohei Uchimura wins all-around title, 2010 World Gymnastics Champs Rotterdam
Japan's Kohei Uchimura won the all-around title at the 2010 World Gymnastics Championship in Rotterdam, Netherlands on Friday. He was the top qualifier for the event and hit 6 for 6 routines. Uchimura is the fifth man to win two world titles, and the second to win them in a row: Yuri Korolyov (1981 and 1985), Bilozerchev (1983 and 1987), Ivan Ivankov (1994 and 1997) and Yang Wei (2006 and 2007). No 3-peats yet. Less than 24 hours after the men's team finals, the men's all-around finals began...tough on the body. The women got a day rest...of training. First event for China's Lu Bo and he crushes his right hand/wrist on his pommel horse warm-up. On the waiting area, the Chinese doctor gives him a super juice injection - he goes up and does a great pommel horse routine. He finished the all-around finals 6th. Uchimura, the reigning world champion, had a taped left shoulder - he skipped the rings for the team finals competition...later in the competition his coach was working on his right shoulder too...perhaps there was some over-compensating, or just the result of so much competing and he needs a break. USA's Jonathan Horton started on floor and was in 20th, then 6th after 4 rotations and he climbed up the standings to third place. Horton had a stuck dismount on p-bars - his 5th event of the day. He barely edged Ukraine's Nikolai Kuksenkov. At the 2009 Worlds Horton said he was embarrassed for finishing 17th, no embarrassment here but he wants gold and said he is eager to go back to the gym and train. Horton's teammate Danell Leyva did the Liukin release move on high bar again as he did turing team finals, catching it flawlessly - it's named after Russian gymnast Valeri Liukin, Nastia's dad and coach, Rebecca Bross's coach, at WOGA. Dennel is coached by his dad too - he was on the sidelines going through the moves as his son performed then on the bar. Winning the silver medal was German's Philipp Boy, he qualified 2nd for the event in preliminaries. He gave a solid performance with little small mistakes and was very happy. Russia's Maxim Devyatovsky was in 2nd after 5 rotations, needed a 14.233 on pommel horse to win a medal, but he fell twice, scoring 11.166 and finishing in 19th place. 2010 World Gymnastics Championships Oct. 22, Rotterdam, Netherlands Men's All-Around Final FX PH SR VT PB HB Total 1.
