- Maybe, just maybe, Rafael Nadal was a tad vulnerable, the thinking went before this French Open. He had lost three times on his beloved red clay already this year, more defeats than he ever had on the surface before heading to Roland Garros. Well, leave it to the eight-time French Open champion's upcoming quarterfinal opponent - 2013 runner-up David Ferrer, one of the men who beat Nadal on[ Read More... ]

If tennis weren't finally going so well for Ernests Gulbis, he could probably make a living as a comedian. And his next task is Novak Djokovic in the French Open semifinals. The 18th-seeded Gulbis reached his first major semifinal in his 27th major tournament, beating sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 Tuesday at Roland Garros. The victory came two days after Gulbis defeated Roger[ Read More... ]

Maria Sharapova needed a set to get going, and once she got going, she couldn't be stopped. The seventh-seeded Russian advanced to the semifinals of the French Open for the fourth straight year, rallying to beat Garbine Muguruza of Spain 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 Tuesday. It's the second straight match in which Sharapova lost the first set but completely controlled the third. Against Muguruza, Sharapova[ Read More... ]

Andrea Petkovic had plenty to be philosophical about when she considered retiring from tennis after a succession of injuries saw her drop out of the top 10 and plummet to 143rd. Fast forward 18 months, the 26-year-old German is into a Grand Slam quarterfinal again after beating unseeded Kiki Bertens 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 at the French Open on Monday. Petkovic also reached the quarters at the[ Read More... ]

The last of the 22 U.S. men and women who were in the French Open singles draws, 15th-seeded Sloane Stephens, lost 6-4, 6-3 Monday to No. 4 Simona Halep of Romania in the fourth round. That came a day after the last American man in singles, No. 10 John Isner, exited before the quarterfinals, too. The No. 1-seeded men's doubles team, defending champions Bob and Mike Bryan, lost in the[ Read More... ]

For the first time in his career, Rafael Nadal will make a fifth straight appearance in the French Open quarterfinals. Ernests Gulbis is not ashamed at all about destroying rackets during matches. During his five-set victory over Roger Federer at the French Open on Sunday, Gulbis broke a racket by throwing it to the ground after losing a point. Just to make sure the job was done, Gulbis stepped on the racket and twisted the handle, completely mangling the thing and earning a warning from the chair umpire.[ Read More... ]

So unbeatable for so long until the closing days of Grand Slam tournaments, Roger Federer is suddenly accumulating early exits. Federer's streak of nine consecutive quarterfinals at the French Open ended Sunday with a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 fourth-round loss to 18th-seeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia. ''A lot of regrets,'' Federer said. After that decade-old setback, though, Federer[ Read More... ]

Hard-serving John Isner was broken a total of once through his first three French Open matches. His opponent Sunday, Tomas Berdych, needed all of one game Sunday to equal that total, breaking Isner at love to begin their fourth-round encounter. The 10th-seeded Isner failed in his bid to become the first American man in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros since Andre Agassi in 2003, losing[ Read More... ]

Leading two sets to one but already down a break in the fourth, Gael Monfils decided he needed to catch his breath. If there truly is a secret to the success Sloane Stephens enjoys at Grand Slam tournaments, she isn't willing to share it. After beating No. 22 Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-3, 6-4 to reach the fourth round at the French Open for the third year in a row, the 15th-seeded Stephens insisted Saturday that even she can't quite put a finger on why her results are so much better at tennis' four most[ Read More... ]

It was a long, hard-fought victory for Svetlana Kuznetsova, and it seems to have made her feel like a champion again. An eight-time French Open champion, that is. Kuznetsova, who won the title at Roland Garros in 2009, broke Petra Kvitova twice when the fifth-seeded Czech was serving for the match and won 6-7 (3), 6-1, 9-7 Saturday to earn a spot in the fourth round.
