Coaches Misconduct - Parents Read!
Post Icon
Quote:
Unfortunately, coaches misconduct does happen, in any sport, not just gymnastics. There is another story out today about a coach sexually abusing a gymnast and telling her to use cocaine to lose weight at a well-known gym club WOGA in Texas, not by the owners, by someone they have hired. Parents should really watch practices now and then as much as possible and be involved! The story on the WOGA lawsuit (well known as the gym of Olympic Gold Medalist Carly Patterson and Nastia Liukin) is listed now on the Gym Chat news page, the direct link is http://www.kvia.com/global/story.asp?s=5381525 .

If you scroll down the Gym Chat News page, there's another article on this with more info, the direct link is http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/localnews/stories/090806dnmetgymnast.3339e81.html . We had a guy like this in our gym too, in the way that the parents and kids were complaining about his spotting technique and behavior being inappropriate as a coach, he wasn't accused of any sexual assualt crimes though. Why does it take gym owners so long to investigate and fire a gymnastics coach with all those complaints? In our gym, the only reason this coach isn't working there is because he moved and so took another coaching job. Sometimes it feels like maybe the reason these kinds of coaches don't get fired is because the gym owners like to use these complaints to pay a coach like him less than the others, and profit themselves, not thinking of the gymnasts well being. That would really suck. This coach in the article could even get another job in Florida after leaving WOGA, so maybe this coach screening thing is a problem in general.

The gymnasts can tell the difference between the correct coach spot and an inappropriate one. Best to listen to the kids also!
Parents, read this: Local topics : Wsj It's from the news page on Gym Chat: http://gymchat.com/news.php
Gym Daddy, have you seen this post?: Originally Posted by meganclarke The Gym Chat Forum has a thread on this topic with links to the Nick Checker situation: A coach that doesn’t want parents to watch?! From the site, gymnasticscoaching.com: A coach Nick Checker (Nicholas Checker) resigned his position after 21-years with his club to protest a management decision that opened his gym to spectators, including parents. Checker had argued that he covered the viewing window “so parents didn’t distract children and to reduce risk of injury.” Personally, I prefer children’s sports clubs to be open to spectators at all times, even at risk of distraction. But there is a great compromise, one with which almost every coach can agree. Spectators sit behind one-way mirrored glass. Parents can see in. But the gymnast sees a mirror. Well, Nicholas Checker resigned and did not like the compromise of the one-way mirror installation. Why the controversy may seem to still exist is because of the resignation following the compromise—that is, this coach would leave employment AFTER the proposed compromise of installing the two-way mirror. There was also talk recently concerning his blocking the path of the parents by placing a mat in the path. And the aunt (a 27-year resident of Montville) chose to withdraw her niece from her pursuit of registration in a neighboring town in which the aforementioned coach is said to be working, following a verbal dispute, in which the fifteen-year old was told she didn’t have the “right” hair or looks to be one of the women on the “team,” which followed the question by the niece whether or not the coach’s toupee was colored (dyed), and if he was indeed 49 years of age as stated (and not 63 which was in fact his true age as of early 2013). Distressing, to say the least. Gym Chat Sports Message Boards -gymnastics,diving,football,soccer,ballet,baseball. .. club governance, Gymnastics, product endorsements, psychology, safety Best perhaps to do some vetting, for one thing to be sure your coach is more devoted to gymnastics, than placing notices looking for a "cast" in a horror video (as was also the case here). Happy flips, and good luck!Gymnastics -- All About the Sport of Gymnastics ----------------- Am not sure why the students just cannot get used to the parents watching. The parents are there during competitions. Plus, blocking the parent's path with a mat and covering the viewing window, not to mention resigning after the proposed compromise of the parents installing a one-way mirror--no brainer here IMHO. Sorry Nicholas Checker. This was a fail. A really good blog which raises the point of "What are we teaching our kids," entitled "The Gym Coach," is found on Wordpress. The blogger asks something which raises the question of what is the right atmosphere and considers potential issues: “I really believe that the atmosphere and example we set in the gym is the determining factor to whether the gymnast feels like a failure or a success at the end of her career. . .” In light of this, one might ask, "What are we teaching our coaches?"
