Men's College Gymnastics Programs Extinction?
There are less and less men's college gymnastics programs - a lot less than women's college programs. When comparing to the number of clubs that offer men's & women's gymnastics, you could say there is a lower demand of men's gymnastics than women's gymnastics. Also, more men still do club gymnastics when in college and don't retire the elite path like most of the women do when they go to college, so they can do club gymnastics instead of college gymnastics as well - so not much opposition there. ...And there are the budget issues. Football brings in money. Basketball too...not as much in men's gymnastics. [quote]As strong as the Minnesota men's gymnastics program is this season, it might be on the verge of extinction along with men's collegiate gymnastics as a whole. "As an NCAA sport, we have such a small number of programs left," Gophers coach Mike Burns said. "I'd say we're an endangered species, of sorts." In 1969, the Minnesota program was one of 230 in the nation. As the team started competing this season, the Gophers were one of 19.
