"Late rally not enough to overcome China Team USA takes silver in women's team competition" - http://wcsn.com/article/news.jsp?ymd=20061018&content_id=9215&vkey=gymnastics_news&id=34012&dpre=
"It's always a great accomplishment to win any medal," said Nastia Liukin. "We are a little disappointed but very proud of one another." The USA hit two of three routines on vault, its first event. The team's total of 44.600 put them just behind Romania , which had 45.225. China was third with 44.250. The U.S. squad then moved to the uneven bars, where a missed release on one of its routines dropped the three-gymnast score to 45.275, which still was enough to pull the United States into the lead with 89.875, followed closely by China with 89.550. The U.S. women were solid on the beam, but their 45.575 was not enough to hold off a charging China, who totaled 136.325 to the USA's 135.45. The U.S. women had their best performances on the floor exercise and despite having the best team score for the event, it was not enough to catch China. "Certainly we are proud to win a silver medal," said Martha Karolyi, the women's national team coordinator. "Unfortunately, we had two unexpected mistakes, which are unexplainable. We beat ourselves today."
other teammates quotes:
"China did their job," said Memmel, who will attempt to defend her all-around world crown in the finals tomorrow. "We had some mistakes and you can't make mistakes." Sacramone said, "We did a good job. We had a few mistakes. We're happy with the results. We had a great finish and we worked hard."
For USA: Jana Bieger, Chellsie Memmel, Alicia Sacramone and Nastia Liukin were competing. (3 up, 3 count for team finals) All-Around finals are tomorrow!! yay! :D

The Gymnova mats at the competition look really soft. The vault table looks soft too. Some USA things: Nastia had a weird, awkward landing on her double layout, prob. b/c of her sprained ankle and she didn't want to aggravate it by trying to save it and make it a stick landing, Chellsie did a high release move on the high bar but slipped off. Bieger fell on her vault. They said the avg. age of the Russian womens team is 23. Bart and Tasha were the commentators....Tasha seemed like she was trying to use big words...it was kind of unnatural - like "I presume..."...anyways, much better gymnastics on tv than on the internet!! better resolution and sound on the tv!!

"Gymnastics-Chinese women snatch first world title" - http://au.sports.yahoo.com/061018/3/xq3u.html USA falls:
A fall from the asymmetric bars by 2005 all-round champion Chellsie Memmel and Jana Bieger's botched landing from the vault ended up costing the 2003 champions the title as they were edged by just .850 of a point.
-Bieger's vault: 13.950
Memmel gone into the final having previously earned the second highest mark on the asymmetric bars. A repeat performance was not on the cards. She drew gasps from the crowd when she tumbled to the ground on her hands and knees after failing to grip the bar following a release manoeuvre. Shaken by the mishap, Memmel took her time to regain her composure before mounting the lower of the two bars to go through the motions. On dismount she hastily ran down the stairs and could barely look up when her score of 14.475 flashed up. To compound a miserable day, Memmel had to fight hard to maintain her footing on the beam and Bieger picked up a 0.1 deduction on the floor for stepping out of the area.

"We all had a few mistakes here and there but that's the sport of gymnastics and we're going to have to learn from our mistakes," said American Nastia Liukin.
China wins:
Memmel was the last gymnast to compete and needed to score more than 16.350 on the floor to overhaul the Chinese total. She nailed each one of her complex twists, tumbles and landings but her mark of 15.500 was not enough to take her team to the top of the podium. As soon as Memmel's score flashed up, the Chinese team went into a huddle and exchanged hugs and kisses as their cheering fans rose on their feet mark the historic moment.

"I'm very satisfied with the performance and I think the Chinese team is number one. This is the best performance for the Chinese gymnasts," said China's He Ning.

China had suffered mishaps on every apparatus in the preliminaries but got their act together when it counted. Despite being .325 of a point adrift of the U.S. after two apparatus, they kept their composure for once. They effortlessly floated between the bars to earn more than 15 points on each of their three routines and no one could match Zhang's intricate balancing skills. A full twisting Korbut flip was just one of the many elements she showed off with aplomb to earn 15.950, the highest mark awarded to any gymnast in the final.
