Here's some review on the prelims so far: "Tough ruling can't stop U.S. at worlds" - http://www.boston.com/news/world/europe/articles/2006/10/16/italy_takes_lead_in_world_gymnastics/ The U.S. protested a dance combo deduction from Sacramone's floor routine - she got a 14.875 instead of 15.375 if they won the protest....guess now they have to pay the protest fee. Sacramone, the defending champ on it, doesn't make even finals for floor, but does on vault. Luikin did her bars routine with a small step of the landing, and was the only girl to score over 16.

"Toronto gymnast leads Canadian team at world gymnastics championship" - http://www.canada.com/topics/sports/story.html?id=6ff3d095-6c7b-40e9-a6bf-60c0de01132f&k=87922 Toronto's Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs will find out tomorrow after the other 11 countries compete in the prelims if she will make event finals for beam - right now she's ranked 3rd on that event. "Only three Canadian women have ever made it to a world championship final and anything better than 5th in any event - beam, uneven bars, floor or vault - would set a Canadian record. The top eight in each of the four women's disciplines advance to the individual event finals, and the top 24 qualify for the all-around final."

Ya, Liukin had a step forward on her double layout...and, guess what??!!! you can watch videos from YouTube from the 2006 World Championships! Cool, thanks! Yup, the bar routines are soooo long - getting longer! to put in all the extra points! Liukin does her giants like khorkina, tapping over the bars, did u notice? looks kinda like she slipped off the bars on her double layout (and let go too early) and so didn't clear the flips enuf and so took that extra step forward. Cool routine though! Chellsie's too - when u compare Chellsie's giants tap to Nastia's, Chellsie's looks more stable and comfortable, doing the straddle tap instead of the Russian style over the bars...a girl in my gym does the tap over the bars style also, she's thin and pretty tall too!

"Gymnastics-Error-prone China fail to overtake U.S." - http://au.sports.yahoo.com/061017/3/xn9y.html Qualifying teams are: U.S.,China,Ukraine,Russia,Romania,Australia,Brazil,Spain Team competition on Wednesday! Top individual qualifiers: Defending champion Chellsie Memmel, Vanessa Ferrari and Jana Bieger U.S. team wins qualifiers:
AARHUS, Denmark, Oct 17 (Reuters) - China's hopes of showcasing a spectacular array of skills were dashed by numerous spills on Tuesday as they failed to overtake the United States in women's qualifying at the world gymnastics championships. The Chinese women had promised much this week, including performing innovative manoeuvres on the asymmetric bars. Falls from every apparatus, however, kept their points total down to 239.525, trailing the Americans by 3.800. "The Chinese team did okay. We are not disappointed," team coach Lu Shanzhen said. Ukraine sneaked into third place with 235.025 after Russia also put in a scrappy display to finish fourth.
The Chinese women's team competition:
Keen to impress the judges before hosting the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China began their quest for gold on their strongest discipline -- the balance beam. When Li Ya fell off the wood twice it started a chain reaction among her team mates. Their crestfallen faces rapidly became a familiar sight on the final day of qualifying. Zhou Zhuoru almost lost her footing while attempting a 360-degree pirouette and she did slip off just seconds later. Despite the two mishaps, Zhang Nan, at 20 the veteran on the side, produced a sublime exhibition to earn 16.075. It was enough to take the Chinese into the lead after the first rotation. FIRST PERSON Daring skills and imaginative choreography peppered with crash landings became a familiar sight. World champion Cheng Fei soared into the lead on her trademark apparatus with a 2-1/2 twisting vault while He Ning sat down on her landing. Pang Panpan also ended up on her backside following her first tumble on the floor exercise, as Cheng again pulled out a stunning routine to score 15.475. Li had been expected to become the first person to perform a move on the bars which she hoped would soon be recognised as the 'Li Ya spring'. She looked to be in trouble the moment she mounted the frame, however, and after struggling to re-discover her rhythm she fell from the lower of the bars. Hand on hips, she stared at the bar for what seemed an eternity before finally getting her wits together and completing the display. Giving a strained smile to the judges, she rushed down the steps, head down, and slumped on to a chair to reflect on what had turned out to be a nightmare experience. "Li Ya had a difficult routine, and today she fell. She is young, so she will have a chance next year," coach Lu said. Zhang compounded the misery when she too lost her grip in the same manner, leaving no Chinese gymnast in the bars final. The team leader also missed out on a spot in the all-round final after Zhou and Pang accumulated a higher total from their efforts in the four events.
Another article with some details on China's / USA's teams / women's prelims: "Gymnastics: Chinese blunders keep US women on track at world championships" - http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_sports/view/236056/1/.html U.S. qualifying competition:
Despite their own drama with Ashley Priess and Natasha Kelley both falling off the beam and defending floor champion Alicia Sacramone failing to make the final the Americans served notice that they intend to defend the title they won for the first time in Anaheim three years ago. Memmel, the only member of that team remaining, showed no signs of the ankle injury she suffered a week ago. The 18-year-old from Milwaukee achieved 61.350 with 15-year-old Ferrari, bidding for Italy's first women's world title, on 61.100 and Bieger 60.625. But she insisted she was concentrating first on the team's effort. "My main focus was the team. After Wednesday I can think about myself," said Memmel. And she insisted the US were just warming up in their title defence. "The team was in good form, there were just a few mistakes here and there but nothing we can't fix," said Memmel.
