Default 2008 USA Gymnastics National Championships (Visa), News

Shawn Johnson, reigning world champion;
Quote:
"The nerves are pretty high. It's a big meet, getting ready for trials," she said after Wednesday's workout. "But I'm so excited. I've been waiting so long to get back to championships. To know that everything is starting, my adrenaline is going and I can't wait to start."
Quote:
"At the beginning of the year, when you start your new season, everybody starts from a clean slate," Johnson said. "Personally, I don't feel like I have that title. I feel like I still am someone who's fighting to get there. I think it's because I do feel that that I'm able to perform so strong and fight so hard for it."
Quote:
Only the top two women at the Olympic trials, June 19-22 in Philadelphia, are guaranteed spots on the team for Beijing. The remaining four will be chosen after a selection camp at the Karolyi ranch in July.

"I think our biggest competition is ourselves, and the USA team is going to be the strongest one out there," Johnson said. "Knowing that your biggest competition is your best friend, it's going to make the Olympic trials and qualifying so exciting. But I think it'll make our team even stronger."
New rotuines for Shawn and Nastia Liukin, pushing each other to be better, at the camps and competition:
Quote:
And now comes nationals. While Liukin has an uneven bars routine that is ridiculously difficult, Johnson will be doing a vault so hard only two other women in the world do it. Johnson also will be debuting a new floor routine, to music from the movie "August Rush."

"We're really good friends, we're really good competitors and we're both really good athletes," Johnson said of her rivalry with Liukin. "I think it's great just because it makes me work really hard and makes her work really hard. We're just helping each other get to a higher level for the team."
Shawn's schedule, prom, finishing up school work, classes, finals, and getting ready for the Olympics:
Quote:
She spends 28 hours a week in the gym, only taking off on Sundays. But she still goes to public school, which means getting up early and spending her mornings in the classroom. She took four classes this semester -- French, geometry, literature and biology -- and kept up her 4.0. She also has an active social life; she went to prom with a group of 42 friends. Yes, 42.

But competitions and the monthly national team training camps mean frequent absences from school, and that work doesn't just go away.

"I was getting a little overwhelmed," she said. "My school gave me the option of completely stop schooling for the last two weeks and then finish it all during the summer. But I still attended school. I didn't want to have that nagging at me and hanging over my head. So I finished up finals and I finished up everything I could.

"I have a few little things (left). But other than that I'm good to go."
At the Nationals competition:
Quote:
Ropes and Mats: Sloan will only do uneven bars and balance as she continues to recover from a knee injury. ... Chelsea Davis is injured and isn't expected to compete. ... The 1988 U.S. women's team that was fourth at the Seoul Olympics will be recognized Saturday.

The rest of the competitors need to make a strong impression. That includes 2005 all-around world champion Chellsie Memmel and 2006 world silver medalist Jana Bieger, who are coming back from injuries.
Chelsea Davis, a 15-year-old up-and-comer who trains under Chris Burdette and 1991 world champion Kim Zmeskal-Burdette at Texas Dreams in Coppell, suffered an injury to her left knee Friday and won't compete. Zmeskal-Burdette said Davis will petition USA Gymnastics for a berth in the trials.

Karolyi recently mentioned Davis, an Austin native, as a potential surprise for the six-person Olympic team.

"It will be very important to prove herself," Karolyi said Wednesday. "We basically can't fall back on anything that she did before. ... It's definitely a major setback for her, unfortunately. Let's hope the injury is not that bad and she's able to perform in good condition at the trials."

Note: Rebecca Bross, the defending junior national champion who trains at WOGA in Plano, is injured and will not defend her title.

You have to compete 2 different vaults to qualify for vault event standings.

Nastia Liukin has such a longer bars routine compared with the rest of them.

Top 12 AA go to the USA Olympic Trials in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania June 19-22, plus: Alica Sacramone, Bridget Sloan, Shayla Worley, Britney Ranzy, Amber Trani, Chelsea Davis and Darling Hill.

Alicia Sacramone really stuck her second vault. Samantha Peszek really stuck her beam dismount. Shawn Johnson punches hard on beam and really sticks it on the beam, very solid. Nastia was awesome on bars, she landed really low on her dismount but saved it very good - really strong! The tv commentators kept saying that Jana Bieger is getting scored hard, that she got scored lower on routines she did the same by like .3, and on the other hand Alicia Sacramone was getting the benefit of the doubt, on vault, and on floor when stepping out of bounds. Chellsie Memmel has made a great comeback. She upgraded her vault from the 1st day of competition with an added twist to her yurchenko layout to make it a double twist and stuck the landing!

Jana Bieger still kept consistent and hit her routines, even with the "harsh" scoring on her, as they said, which shows how strong of a competitor she is. They showed her bars routine - she did have some form breaks with her legs coming apart. Nastia had really good form on all her events - you can really tell the difference between their bar routines. On the first day of competition Nastia messed up on her front handspring double front, looked like she was trying to save the landing, landed on her knees and shins though, ended up going out of bounds, and also had a touch down with her hand. But on the second day of competition she stuck it in warm up in the beginning of the rotation and in her competition routine.

Shawn's floor routine music was cued wrong, a little after the beginning, so she stepped off the floor mat to get the music started from the beginning and cued correctly.

Shayla Worley came to Boston but decided not to compete because she has a hermiated disc from camp, a re-injury from before. She does ice massage 4 times a day.

Everybody asks how come Ivana Hong's coach Al Fong always wears the black leather gloves. He wore it when he was spotting her bars routine, but not afterwards when he was in the waiting area part. So, probably he is allergic to chalk or he likes spotting with gloves on. In other video it shows him spotting floor at his gym with his gloves on, but could also be because he doesn't want to keep putting them on/off for the chalk.

Chellsie Memmel is scheduling her practices and comeback from her shoulder injury to peak for the Olympics.

Shawn Johnson looks nervous in the beginning, but more excited nervous, and when she starts, she looks more relaxed. Versus the lip biting gymnasts. Some probably do the lip biting thing to stay tight.

Here's the post/article from last year on Shayla Worley's herniated disc:
Quote:
Shayla moved closer to the gym three years ago. Her parents are now divorced, and Shayla lives with her mom and younger brother, Olin, in Baldwin Park. But as Shayla got older and better, injuries started to hamper her. Shayla ticks off her medical history as easily as one would count to 10: a herniated disc, broken ankles, broken feet, toes, a broken arm. In 2004, she had to wear a full-leg cast from her foot to her hip because of a knee injury. She wore that cast for eight weeks but still practiced on the uneven bars despite having one good leg.
